American holly (ilex opaca), the state tree of delaware, is a fantastic tree, with brilliant red berries and dark green leaves that are popular decorations during the christmas season.. Known as “the whitest ” of all woods , it pretty much holds true to that title , holly comes in several variations …., youpon , big leaf ect.. , i have used both big leaf and youpon holly with great results , although youpon holly rarely exceeds 12″ in diameter at the base , mostly a shrub , but for inlays and small projects it works great..
American holly, also called christmas holly, is one of the whiter woods available. it is difficult to dry and must be kiln-dried rapidly and correctly to prevent bright green stains from appearing. once dry it is a fairly stable wood. it grows predominantly in the eastern part of the united states.. I have access to an american holly that is dying out from the top down...maybe due to our drought. it's still green up to about 20 feet and is probably 14-inch diameter. i found a few posts indicating the wood is very white and tight-grained. i have a few small pieces i plan to experiment....
